How Telematics Streamlined Vehicle Maintenance for Avondale Estates
The Atlanta-adjacent police department ushered in a new era of scheduled vehicle maintenance with Ford Pro™ Telematics.
In 2022, Avondale Estates, Georgia, began transitioning some of its police department’s gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). Chief Harry Hess had his reservations at first, but the EVs proved to be a worthy investment, resulting in monthly savings for the department. Beyond EV adoption, working with Ford Pro has ushered in a new era of scheduled vehicle maintenance for Avondale Estates PD’s remaining gas-powered vehicles. When Hess first joined the department, he inherited vehicles that hadn’t followed a consistent vehicle maintenance schedule.
He was determined to change this.
Hess activated Ford Pro Telematics,1 which works by collecting key data, such as vehicle health alerts, using the vehicle’s built-in modem or plug-in device. That data is then brought into the Ford Pro Intelligence software platform. It’s monitored, analyzed, and delivered to a dashboard, where customers can see valuable fleet information at a glance.
When a vehicle’s check-engine light turns on, for example, Hess receives an alert in real time and can schedule necessary repairs. But he can also track things like the odometer readings, oil life remaining, recalls, location, driver behavior, and more. “The biggest advantage to using Ford Pro Telematics1 software is that it’s made tracking and completing vehicle maintenance so much easier,” Hess said.

Additionally, Hess used data from Ford Pro Telematics1 to develop a fleet replacement plan, which the department previously lacked. “Today, our replacement plan is five years or 100,000 miles for patrol vehicles,” Hess said. However, thanks to Ford Pro Telematics,1 Hess has been able to adjust decommissioning timelines based on real-time data inputs.
“If I see one vehicle is costing me more, I can decommission it a little earlier or vice versa,” he said. “For example, between the mileage and the costs, I now know I can let one of my Police Interceptor® Utility SUVs roll another year, even though it’s already reached the five-year mark. That’s money I don’t need to budget for the 2025 fleet and can earmark for other needs.”

Avondale Estates is proof that even the most charming small towns can be cutting edge. Not only has it begun transitioning to electric police vehicles, but it’s also adopted software to keep tabs on its fleet and help ensure vehicles are properly maintained.
